Day 62 – Birdwood Downs: day trip to Derby
Day trip to restock and reset. There was OPTUS reception in Derby and we all caught up on stuff.
We went to the Derby Wharf to check it out at about 11am, and it was amazing. The tide was right out. There was a lot of interesting info about the tides. There is a 9m difference between low and high tide, due to the shallow sea bed at the coast. As the tide moves in from the deeper water, it gets amplified on the shallow coastal shelf. There was a big loading jetty, and a boat anchored out to sea, because the tide was too far out for it to dock at the jetty. We took lots of photos then returned 3hr later and watched the ship docked at the jetty, taking on fuel, and then it moved to the boat ramp and unloaded some cargo. The current was amazingly strong underneath the jetty. We walked out and watched the water and debris move at high speed. There was a bloke letting crab nets down off the jetty and he was weighing them down with bricks, and they still weren’t staying still.
