Day 72-74 - Purnululu National Park (The Bunge Bungles)

Day 72-74 Purnululu National Park (The Bungle Bungles)

We had pre-booked our stay here, and the info on the website was brilliant, including driving times between different areas in the park, e.g. it’s only 53km from the highway to the visitors centre, but it takes 2-3 hours due to the road being windy and hard yakka, and suitable for high clearance 4WD only, and only single axle off-road trailers or vans.  There is a caravan park right by the highway where folks with larger vans can base themselves, and do day trips into the park.  The staff at the visitors centre were very friendly, and explained to us in detail what times of day are best to do the various walks within the park, to see the features of the landscape bathed in the best light.

The park is basically divided into a north and south half.  We stayed at the north camp ground, called Kurrajong.  There were 120 sites, and we could choose our own.  There was plenty of space, and multiple long-drops, most with toilet paper.  There were also bore water taps, which we used for washing dishes and makeshift showers.

Echinda Chasm – 1.2 km return – allow 1 hours.  11:15am is the magical time to be in the chasm, when the sun passes overhead and illuminates it.  There were about 30 of us all gathered at the end of the chasm waiting for the spectacle.  It was as if we were all waiting to worship the sun god or something.  It was rather specky when it finally happened.

Cathedral Gorge.- 2km return – about an hour’s walk into a large amphitheatre, which was impressive to hang out in and marvel at.

Piccaninny Creek Lookout – 2.8km return - about an hour.  A nice walk along a wide creek bed, to a lookout of the Domes.  It sure must be a sight to see when the water is moving through here.

The Domes – 700m loop – about half an hour.  To see these rocks up close is quite amazing.
