Day 26 - Mataranka rest day.
We woke up to a beautiful cool morning. There is a flock of peacocks
circulating around the Caravan park. The smells of breakfast are wafting about
- coffee, toast, bacon, even stirfry. After a slow start we put our bathers on
and drove to the Thermal Pool, 7.5km away. It was lovely and warm, about 30
degrees, and basically a giant swimming pool, paved around the edges and it had
generous steps to get into the pool. It would be good for people with smaller
children or people who aren't confident swimmers, as it's shallow enough to
touch the bottom in most places. You don't really need a noodle here, but we
had ours anyway.
There was a COVID19 sign there warning people to socially distance by at
least one small crocodile. Territory humor hey
There was a kiosk nearby which had amazing photos of floods earlier this
year. There was also the Mataranka homestead, which had an interesting story
about "the notorious Dr Gilruth".
We went back to camp for lunch and a short rest, then bathered up again
and went back to the Bitter Springs, which we preferred for its spaciousness
and interesting snorkeling.
Got back to camp in time for "Campfire Ben" to get into his
natural habitat and set a roaring fire for camp oven - cooked roast chicken for
dinner. So good.
